Looking after your mental health...

Everyone needs to look after their mental health in order to maintain an overall sense of wellbeing. There are lots of things you can do to help boost your mental health, our list below gives some of the suggestions and examples that students have given us of what they do to help keep a positive sense of mental wellbeing!

  • Spending time with friends and loved ones - having a strong social support network is particularly useful during stressful times.

  • Do something you enjoy - whether it's participating in a hobby by yourself, or joining a university society, it's good to spend time doing things you enjoy.

  • Physical activity - whether it's joining a university sports club, going to the gym or going for a walk in the park, physical exercise can be beneficial to mental health.

  • Treat yourself - it's easy to get wrapped up in studying and buying text books, but don't forget to look after yourself. Take some time to have a nice bath, or buy the jacket you've had your eye on.

  • Sleep and rest - everyone can relate to the negative effects of sleep deprivation, and not only will lack of sleep affect your ability to study, it will also affect your mood.

  • Be organised - at university it's natural for procrastination to hit, and for some, it acts as a motivation to complete work. However sometimes it can create unnecessary stress! So if you're the type of person who doesn't respond well to tight deadlines, try to organise yourself so that you are well prepared, therefore helping to put your mind at ease.

  • Talk to someone - talking about problems and things that are bothering you, whether it's with a friend or a counsellor, can really help. The University Counselling Service run groups where you can meet and talk with students who have similar problems, as well as other services. Don't suffer in silence, if things become too much, seek help.
